Welp, rented Timesplitters 2 last night, and I must definitely say, "wow".
The original I was a fan of, though I never bought it. The zombie-factor was cool, the builder (while really simple) was great to play with, it was good ol' FPS gaming, and I liked the storyline a great deal (I mean, c'mon, it's got ZOMBIES in it, who can't like that? ;D).
But, the sequel seems to have taken just about everything and made it even more enjoyable. The graphics are great, very detailed (and they run uber-smooth), and the characters' textures are a kooky cartoonish look that makes it feel like a Saturday Morning Cartoon/`60s comic book, just with a bad-ass edge, guns, and zombies.
The improved storyline I also appreciate. Gives more backround and "why the hell do these people KNOW that they're supposed to fight the Timesplitters?" is answered to an extent. The different time-periods are cool to go through, and they have a nice backround story going on in them. Like the Madman of Notre Dame, the Colonel in the Wild West, and while I hated the sneaking-around gameplay of it and it was much too short, the Neo-Tokyo 2019 had a good atmosphere and plotline.
As for guns, I was a tad disappointed to see some major repition in the firearms from 1970-1990, but, meh, who can blame'em. They had deadlines. But, the shotgun is nice to see back again (in all it's 2-barrel glory , the tactical shotgun is a good little diddy (nice in the Sergio's Last Stand challenge), the Wild West guns are just...well..fun...and the 1932 Chicago with akimbo Tommy Guns....mmmmmm...Tommy Guns.
The builder has been updated a tad, thankfully and they've added new things, like being able to make single-player maps (though still really simple), more styles of rooms, and the lighting stuff seems a bit updated as well, more complicated, which gives some more variety to the kind of lights you can pick. (of course I'm still using blues and teals and greens)
I just wish there was, I dunno, more stuff to unlock and such for it. It's a neat little builder, and they could actually make an entire game out of that in general.
As for the challenges, yeah, they're the usual difficulty - super hard most of the time after the first few beginner ones. But, they've been fun. Love the zombie ones, of course. Zombies in games are just...cool. And beheading zombies with your fists, the two types of shotguns, etc. Good stuff.
So far in the Single-Player I'm up to 1972 - Atom Smasher. This is where the weapon repitition kinda begins to bother me. Look, the same silenced pistol for 1990 and 2019, that's fine for that...but...c'mon. Why not like a Walther PPK or some weapon that was used during the early `70s? Like a .38 or .44 revolver? Bah. Guess that's just me. Take what you can get, I supposed.
Anyways. For me, Timesplitters 2, so far, gets a thumbs-up. It's so gripping I haven't gotten to trying out The Thing (which I also rented). ;D
